Synopsis: Mixing horror with black comedy, DOPPELGANGER marks the sixth time director Kiyoshi Kurosawa and actor Koji Yakusho have worked together. Yakusho stars as mild-mannered scientist Hayasaki Michio, whose entire life is thrown into disarray when a man identical in appearance but opposite in personality enters his life. The main thought on Michio's mind, however, is an ancient tale that claims an encounter with a doppelganger signifies that death is imminent. Michio must now balance the terror he feels over the prospect of his demise, with the day-to-day difficulties of dealing with his insistent and ever-present twin. Kurosawa inventively uses split screens and other formal techniques to explore the themes of personality and duality in DOPPELGANGER.
